The Cincinnati Kid (1965)
Do you really have the right to call yourself a poker fan if you have not seen this movie? Or just to call yourself a real movie buff? We say no to both of these questions. The legendary Steve McQueen plays an aspiring poker player who is trying to win against the seasoned pro. The depiction of the game in the movie is realistic and the acting is just superb. Many consider this movie to be the best poker movie of all times, but you should see that for yourself.
Maverick (1994)
Maverick is another Hollywood masterpiece that revolves around a high-stakes poker game. The idea for the movie came from the legendary TV show from the 1960’s that carried the same name. Mel Gibson and James Garner starred in the movie and beautifully depicted the atmosphere of the underground poker scene. However, some aspects of the game itself in the movie are unrealistic, so some poker hardheads might be disappointed.
Casino Royale (2006)
Is there anything more exciting than Bond movies? Of course, the main plot of Bond movies does not center around poker. However, in this sequel, Daniel Craig (starring James Bond) plays a whole lot of poker while trying to catch the villain and the leader of the biggest terrorist organization in the world. It’s an exceptional movie for all poker and action fans.
A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966)
Last but not least, another quite old movie on our list. However, don’t get scared away by its age – this movie is worth every minute of your time. A lot of refined poker and movie connoisseurs still regard this movie as one of the best movies of the 20th century. Henry Fonda stars as a poor farmer who enters a high-stakes poker game to get enough money to buy land. The poker game lasts pretty much throughout the movie but it does not make it any less exciting because of that.
